Ballet Dancing Explained

Ballet, as well as being hard work, is exciting and challenging. You are never to old to start.

Not everyone is suited to ballet as a profession, but anybody can appreciate how much hard work and discipline goes into ballet dancing, and only once you have experienced the art for yourself, will you be able to see why it can quickly become a passion of yours.

You are never to old to start ballet, but it will be easier if you start young. Students who study the art of classical ballet have the added bonuses of developing supple and strong bodies, perfect posture, grace and long beautifully formed muscles.

Ballet dancing is demanding, and if you want to perfect your art, you need to put in loads of practice. If you start ballet classes for the first time as an adult, you will have to work hard to mold your body slowly into the required positions, but you will appreciate the art and have a greater understanding for it than a six year old would.

If you can do ballet, then all the other dance forms are much easier to master. Classical ballet technique makes you look good in any of the other dance styles that you try, and you will find the learning curve a lot faster.

They say that it takes a good ten years to make a dancer, so do not expect to be wonderful overnight. Time, correct training, repetition and hard work are some of the things that make great dancers. Classical ballet take loads of commitment and perseverance, and the more classes you can attend each week the better, depending on your goals. Some people take up ballet as a form of exercise, while others want to excel and do their exams to get a sense of achievement.

Ballet classes normally start with gentle warm up exercises or stretches, before moving onto the bar for an even more intense warm up. Ballet dancers perfect their technique at the bar, as well as warm up their muscles to prepare for the work in the centre.

In the centre, there will normally be different exercises to challenge your technique, for example turns, jumps, balancing steps and traveling steps from the corner.

Towards the end of your ballet class your teacher will put the steps together into a dance or enchainement to challenge your brain.

At the end of ballet class, it is a good idea to stretch your muscles and do a cool down before leaving.

The ballet was adapted from a novella called Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and it tells the tale of a water nymph who is the object of desire of a young prince named Palemon. The premiere of the ballet took place at the Royal Opera House, London, on 27 October 1958, with the composer as guest conductor. Excerpt: Samuel Becketts Quad was written in 1981 and first appeared in print in 1984 (Faber and Faber) where the work is described as piece for four players, light and percussion and has also been called a ballet for four people. It resembles something the shape-theatre ensemble Mummenschanz might have conceived, a frantic mime. The only thing in the Beckett canon that is at all similar is the short mime at the beginning of What Where. The play was first transmitted by the Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Germany on 8 October 1981 as Quadrat 1 + 2. Beckett himself directed (assisted by Bruno Voges). The four performers, all members of the Stuttgart Preparatory Ballet School, were, Helfried Foron, Juerg Hummel, Vlaudia Knujpfer and Susanne Rehe. The same performance was rebroadcast on 16 December 1982, by BBC Two. “Quad has a musical structure. It is a kind of canon or catch – a mysterious square dance. Four hooded figures move along the sides of the square. Each has his own particular itinerary. A pattern emerges and collisions are just avoided” (Radio Times).
